The Dreamscape Universe of An Aspiring Scribe

"One describes a tale best by telling the tale. You see? The way one describes a story, to oneself or to the world, is by telling the story. It is a balancing act and it is a dream. The more accurate the map, the more it resembles the territory. The most accurate map possible would be the territory, and thus would be perfectly accurate and perfectly useless. The tale is the map that is the territory." --Neil Gaiman, 'American Gods'

Bond. James Bond...

Well, I caved. I finally saw a James Bond movie. Honestly, I don't know what took me so long.

I had been thinking about making the new film, Casino Royale, my first experience with Bond, but I decided to give the one and only Sean Connery the honour with the very first film made, Dr. No. And I have to say that I was pretty impressed; it wasn't the best action/thriller movie I've ever seen, but it was up there.

Something I really liked about the film was that it was basically, in a sense, "James Bond Lite". He used his wits more than his gun (the only 'gadget' he has in the whole movie) which just made him seem that much cooler. It seems very strange to say this nowadays, but he just wasn't your typical action hero. Strip away the explosions, gadgets, cars, and firepower and you're left with an extremely interesting character that Sean Connery pulls off very well indeed. One detail I liked was when Bond places a hair over the crack in his hotel-room closet doors, to make sure he knows if anybody comes in and searches the place. Clever.

Oh, and Ursula Andress is absolutely stunning in that bikini. Naturally. (Hey, it's not really me; it's just the chemicals...)

Anyways, I am enjoying diving right in to this pop culture phenomenon with both the movies and the original books by Ian Fleming. It looks like I'll be going through them all together at the same time in a sort of mish-mash. Shaken, not stirred, of course.

Be seeing you,
Steven
